Monsoon Ritucharya: Stay Healthy in Bengaluru Rains

Bengaluru’s monsoon is glorious — cool breezes, green trees, the smell of wet earth. But it is also when our immunity tanks, digestion crashes, joint pain flares up and skin disorders return. Classical Ayurveda dedicates an entire branch to seasonal living: Ritucharya. This is your complete monsoon guide for Bengaluru, written by the doctors at Jantikar Ayurveda.

Why does monsoon mess with our health?

In Ayurveda, monsoon is called Varsha Ritu. The doshas behave like this:

  • Vata — highly aggravated by the cool, damp weather; root cause of joint pain, anxiety, dry skin, indigestion in monsoon
  • Pitta — begins to accumulate (will peak in autumn)
  • Agni — our digestive fire weakens significantly

This combination is why people fall sick most often in monsoon despite no obvious cold weather — your internal environment is changing.

Monsoon Ahara (Diet)

Foods to embrace

  • Warm, cooked, freshly prepared meals — dal-rice with ghee, khichdi, vegetable soups, hot rotis
  • Old grains — old rice (1+ year), old wheat, aged moong dal
  • Light proteins — moong dal, masoor dal, paneer in moderation
  • Ghee — yes, monsoon is the time to use a little extra ghee for joint health and Agni
  • Spices — ginger, pepper, hing, cumin, ajwain, jeera, methi
  • Cooked vegetables — bottle gourd, ridge gourd, snake gourd, drumstick, pumpkin, bitter gourd
  • Warm fluids — jeera-coriander-fennel water, ginger tea, herbal kashayam

Foods to strictly avoid

  • Raw salads, raw sprouts, raw onions — hard to digest in monsoon
  • Curd — obstructive, kapha-aggravating in damp weather. Use buttermilk with ginger instead
  • Cold drinks, ice creams, refrigerated leftovers
  • Street food and chaat — monsoon = water contamination = severe stomach infections
  • Leafy vegetables — hold pesticides, soil contamination & worms; minimise during monsoon
  • Fish and heavy meats — traditional knowledge here aligns with hygiene reality
  • Heavy fried/oily foods — worsen weakened Agni

Monsoon Vihara (Lifestyle)

Wake-up & morning

  • Wake up by 6:30 AM (no later)
  • Drink warm water with a pinch of ginger first thing
  • Skip cold showers in monsoon — always warm water
  • Daily Abhyanga with warm sesame oil prevents Vata aggravation

Daytime

  • Keep your feet dry — wet socks/shoes are the #1 cause of monsoon viral fevers
  • Use natural insect protection (neem oil, eucalyptus)
  • Avoid getting drenched in rain when possible; if you do, change immediately and take warm tea
  • Light exercise indoors — yoga, surya namaskar, pranayama

Sleep & evenings

  • Sleep by 10:30 PM — immunity rebuilds during deep night sleep
  • Do not sleep during the day — worsens Kapha and lethargy
  • Light dinner before 8 PM

The single best Ayurvedic habit for monsoon

If you do nothing else this monsoon, do this: drink CCF tea (cumin-coriander-fennel) throughout the day. 1/2 tsp each of jeera, dhania and saunf boiled in 1 litre of water, sipped warm. Strengthens Agni, prevents bloating, supports immunity. Costs nothing. Works brilliantly.

Best Ayurvedic herbs for monsoon

  • Guduchi (Giloy) — the king of immunity in monsoon
  • Tulsi — prevents and treats cold/cough/viral fevers
  • Trikatu — pepper + long pepper + dry ginger; lights up Agni
  • Chitrak — powerful digestive stimulant
  • Triphala — daily gentle detox

Doses must be customised. Consult your doctor before starting any of these.

Monsoon is the BEST time for Panchakarma

This is a little-known fact. According to classical Ayurveda, Varsha Ritu is the ideal season for Panchakarma. Why?

  • The body’s channels are naturally relaxed and receptive
  • The atmosphere supports gentle detoxification
  • Accumulated doshas from previous seasons can be cleared before they manifest as disease

Common monsoon Panchakarma programs:

  • Basti karma — the single most powerful Vata management therapy
  • Abhyanga + Swedana — for joint pain and stiffness
  • Nasya — for sinusitis, ENT problems, allergies

Common monsoon ailments and Ayurvedic remedies

Cold, cough, viral fever

Tulsi-ginger-pepper tea 3x a day. Sitopaladi churna with honey. Steam inhalation with eucalyptus. If fever persists more than 48 hours, see a doctor immediately.

Indigestion, bloating, loose motions

Skip a meal. Sip warm jeera water. Plain kichdi for the next meal. Add Hingvashtaka churna to ghee on rice.

Joint pain & stiffness

Warm sesame oil massage on affected joints, twice daily. Hot fomentation (Swedana). Consider Kati Basti / Janu Basti at the clinic.

Skin issues (fungal, allergies)

Keep affected areas dry. Apply neem oil. Internally, take Mahatiktaka ghrita as advised. Avoid sweets, curd and refined food.

Anxiety, low mood

Monsoon Vata aggravation can cause anxiety. Daily Abhyanga, Brahmi tea, sleep hygiene and 10 minutes of pranayama help significantly.

Special tips for Bengaluru

  • The temperature drops can be misleading — carry layers; one cold drink and one wet day can land you with a 3-day flu
  • Tap water quality often dips in monsoon — always drink boiled or filtered water
  • Storm drains and Cauvery water issues mean street food risk goes up sharply — cook at home
  • Indoor humidity in Bengaluru apartments stays high — wipe and dry surfaces, run dehumidifiers if possible to prevent mold

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I eat fruits in monsoon?

Yes, but choose seasonal, freshly cut local fruits. Avoid pre-cut fruits, fruit chaats and cold fruits straight from the fridge.

Is curd really that bad?

Daily curd in monsoon worsens kapha and creates congestion in most people. Buttermilk (chaas with ginger, jeera, sendha namak) is the safer alternative.

Should I take Chyawanprash?

Chyawanprash is excellent in monsoon — 1 teaspoon in the morning with warm water/milk strengthens immunity beautifully.

Can children take immunity herbs in monsoon?

Yes — we recommend Tulsi, Giloy and Chyawanprash for children, plus monthly Swarnaprashana.
